Finding 1958 "Segregation"

JoanShear | 02 June, 2006 13:23

Question:
I am trying to get a copy of a science fiction story written by Brian W. Aldiss called "Segregation" that appeared in NEW WORLDS SCIENCE FICTION, issue #73, back in July of 1958, if my information is correct. Can you help me?

Answer:
Neither the Law Library nor the University Library owns any copies of "New Worlds Science Fiction." Science fiction stories are often originally published in science fiction magazines, and then republished in a subsequent book of short stories by the same author. A Google search of "Brian Aldiss segregation" located an Index to Science Fiction Anthologies and Collections.

The story, "Segregation," was included in two of his anthologies under the title "The Game of God". BC has one of the anthologies with that story in it, "Starswarm," in closed storage on the Law School campus, so we were able to pull the book. The table of contents did not list the story "Segregation," but the front matter in the volume noted that the story "The Game of God," subtitled, "Planetary Ecological Survey Team (Craig Hodges)," was originally published in the July 1958 edition of “New Worlds Science Fiction” under the title of "Segregation."
